About the Awards Hosted by Empowering Latino Futures
The awards hosted by Empowering Latino Futures celebrate leadership, creativity, and excellence within and around the Latino community. A central objective of these awards is to recognize the greatness found not only in Latino writers, but also in non-Latino authors who thoughtfully and meaningfully engage with Latino themes, stories, and experiences. At the heart of these efforts is the International Latino Book Awards, one of the largest and most respected literary award programs celebrating Latino authors and stories worldwide. This program honors books across a wide range of genres and categories, highlighting the richness, diversity, and global impact of Latino literature. By honoring a diverse range of voices, the awards highlight the importance of representation, cultural understanding, and authentic storytelling. Latino writers are recognized for sharing narratives that reflect their heritage and lived experiences, while non-Latino writers are acknowledged for contributing to broader awareness and appreciation of Latino culture through respectful and impactful work. At the core of these awards is a commitment to uplifting stories that might otherwise go unheard. Honorees are selected for both their artistic achievements and their ability to inspire, educate, and build bridges across communities. In response to the growing desire to see more films and television productions that authentically reflect Latino voices, Empowering Latino Futures established a second competition within the International Latino Book Awards: the Latino Books Into Movies Awards. This initiative recognizes that many impactful films and series begin as powerful books. Through this program, 113 books have been honored for their potential to be adapted into movies or television productions. By identifying and elevating these works, the program helps bring compelling Latino stories to the attention of the entertainment industry. While the entertainment industry can be slow-moving, it is estimated that approximately 5–10% of recognized titles have received offers for adaptation. Empowering Latino Futures is not directly involved in these negotiations and does not track production deals; authors and their agents are contacted directly by production companies. As part of its commitment to expanding Latino representation in media, the organization actively provides award-winning books to studios for consideration in film and television development. The goal is to create more opportunities for Latino stories to reach wider audiences through visual storytelling. Through all of its initiatives, Empowering Latino Futures continues to reinforce its mission to empower voices, foster dialogue, and promote a more inclusive literary and cultural landscape.
